Out and About in Northern Moab

Autor(en)
Michael Weigl
Abstrakt

This article is a contribution to a conference volume publishing the papers given at a conference in honour of Alois Musil's 150 birthday, held on November 2nd, 2018 at the Headquarters of the Czech Antiquities Authority in Prague. The focus of the conference was on Musil's academic life as Chair of Ancient Near Eastern Studies' Department of Charles University after he had been expelled in 1919 from newly created German-Austria after the demise of the Habsburg Empire and he had been forced to give up his ordinary professorship at the University of Vienna for ethnic reasons. All talks were given in Czech language except the present author's one.
The paper presented by Weigl highlighted Musil's exploration of Northern Moab from his home base at the then mostly Christian village of Madeba as lined out by Musil in his first volume of Arabia Petraea. Special attention was paid to his study of the Wâdi ath-Thamad region during his early years of research in present day Transjordan.
